How to Update DirectX on Windows
DirectX 12 cannot be updated independently — it is part of Windows. To update DirectX on Windows 10 or 11: go to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install all available updates, and restart. After updating, open DXDiag to confirm the DirectX Version field on the System tab.
How to Update DirectX Through Windows Update
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Click Windows Update (Windows 11) or Update & Security → Windows Update (Windows 10).
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates — including optional and driver updates.
- Restart your PC when prompted.
- Open DXDiag (Windows + R, type dxdiag) to confirm DirectX Version shows DirectX 12.
Update GPU Drivers (Also Important)
DirectX feature support depends on your GPU drivers as well as Windows. Even after updating Windows, an outdated GPU driver may limit your DirectX feature level. Update GPU drivers from:
- NVIDIA: nvidia.com/Download
- AMD: amd.com/en/support
- Intel: intel.com download center
Verify Your DirectX Version After Updating
- Press Windows + R, type
dxdiag, press Enter. - On the System tab, find the DirectX Version field.
- Windows 10 and 11 should show DirectX 12.
- Click the Display tab and check DDI Version to confirm your GPU supports the DirectX feature level you need.
